The Opportunity

We are seeking a self-motivated, forward-thinking Full Stack Engineer who is obsessed with delivering value to our customers and is excited to be part of our start digital, stay digital launch of the products we deliver to delight our customers.

As a Full Stack Engineer on our US Segment (John Hancock) technology team, you will play a role in leading our squads that oversee the buying component of our customer journey to develop and deliver transformative and impactful end to end digital solutions to John Hancock agents, producers and customers in new and exciting ways, working directly with a Product Owner, Human Centered Designer, Delivery Leads, other Engineers, and various stakeholders. The right candidate will also be motivated to get it done together, loves to continually learn and guides technical squads utilizing modern technologies and strong engineering practices.

Work arrangement is Hybrid: 3 days in office and 2 days from Home

Location: Boston - MA, USA or Waterloo, ON - Canada or Toronto, ON Canada

What Work Would I Be Doing?

  • Ownership role for technical solutioning, building, execution and deploying cloud-native applications for initiatives and supporting platforms

  • Development experience working with for example Angular, React, .Net, JavaScript on the latest platforms Salesforce, Azure Kubernetes Services (AKS), Application Service Environments (ASE) using DevOps / GitOps

  • Translate Insurance buying requirements into possible solutions and software requirements that seek to transform the life insurance buying process in support of start digital, stay digital.  Validate possible solutions against architectural guardrails

  • Understand, advocate and influence design principles which align with our global and segment strategy and architecture

  • Experimenting with emerging technologies and understanding how they will impact what comes next

  • Prototype and build new functionality to deliver on key product objectives with strong and extendable architectural design

  • Use of agile, rapid agile development and DevOps/DevSecOps principles, test-driven development, continuous integration

  • Builds, codes, tests, maintain high quality software ensuring that the proper quality gates are passed (including test coverage, security validation) using the appropriate DevSecOps tools, in both hands on and leadership coordination roles

  • Strong verbal and communication skills with the ability to effectively articulate and communicate technical vision and the ability to translate the vision into solution and business acumen

  • Manage, coach and mentor junior engineers (directly or matrix) with a passion for growing staff within the organization and sharing technical expertise

Experience and Knowledge

  • Must have 7+ year software development experience working with for example Angular, React, .Net, JavaScript on the latest platforms Salesforce, Azure Kubernetes Services (AKS), Application Service Environments (ASE) using DevOps / GitOps 

  • Must have hands-on Technical Manager with People Management experience

  • Must bring at least 4 - 5 years People Management experience leading 2 - 10 direct reports

  • Must have BS or Engineering degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience

  • Must have experience working on API and Microservice integrations

  • Ability and experience with application performance tuning, caching, and testing and debugging websites as well as backend API’s

  • Experience with Github, Sonarqube and enterprise DevOps pipelines/tools.

  • Collaborative attitude, willingness to work with team members; able to coach, participate in code reviews, share skills and methods

  • Experience and eager with problem-solving abilities and good organizational skills

  • Good verbal and written communication; effectively articulates technical vision, possibilities, and outcomes to non-technical audience

  • Ability to solve problems creatively and effectively; experience in building prototype; experiment with new technologies

The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

Salary range is expected to be between

$102,200.00 USD - $189,800.00 USD

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
