Job Family:

Research Scientist

Reports to:

AI Whitehead Fellow

Job Description Summary:

SCHEDULE: Full-time, on-site

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong background in computer science and a solid understanding of biology to join our interdisciplinary research team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about research and eager to develop and apply cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and computational methods to advance biological discovery.
This role supports high-impact research projects at the intersection of machine learning, single-cell and spatial omics, and systems biology.

About the Sun Lab

The Sun Lab is a highly interdisciplinary research group focused on leveraging AI to uncover the molecular and cellular architecture of complex tissues and disease processes. We specialize in developing computational tools for the analysis of high-dimensional biological data, including single-cell RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and spatial transcriptomics.

Our research goals include:

  • Mapping cell-cell communication networks

  • Understanding immune–brain interactions

    JOB IS FROM: italents.netVIEW
  • Dissecting genotype-phenotype relationships in health and disease

We collaborate closely with experimental biologists and provide access to unique datasets, high-performance computing infrastructure, and a vibrant intellectual environment. This position offers opportunities for meaningful scientific contributions, authorship, and career development.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

  • Design, implement, and optimize machine learning or deep learning models for high-dimensional biological data

  • Analyze and interpret single-cell, spatial omics, and multi-modal datasets

  • Collaborate with both computational and wet lab team members to translate biological questions into computational frameworks

  • Document workflows, generate data visualizations, and contribute to manuscript writing

  • Present research findings in lab meetings and external venues

Required Qualifications

Note: We value depth of experience over years of experience.

  • BSc, MSc, or PhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Engineering, or a related field

  • First-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal or major AI/ML conference

  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, R, PyTorch, TensorFlow); experience with Unix/Linux environments

  • Solid foundation in machine learning; demonstrated interest or experience in applying AI to biological data

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively

  • Strong multitasking skills with the ability to align work with lab goals

Preferred Qualifications (Bonus Skills)

  • Experience with single-cell or spatial transcriptomics data analysis

  • Familiarity with systems biology, neuroscience, immunology, or cancer biology

  • Knowledge of advanced ML techniques (e.g., graph neural networks, contrastive learning, generative models)

  • Experience with workflow management tools (e.g., SLURM, Snakemake, Nextflow) or cloud computing
